1928 Route 66 Foot Race

Andrew Hartley Payne, a 1927 graduate of Foyil High School, won the 1928 transcontinental footrace (nicknamed "The Bunion Derby") LA-NYC a 3,423.5 mile world record in 573 hours 4 minutes and 34 seconds. Andy - "greatest long distance runner in history of competitive running" - won in the 880 and mile (4:45). He practiced by running to and from Foyil High School (5 miles from the family farm.)
