Entering Indian Territory

In 1833, this area was ceded to the Quapaw tribe by the United States Government. Lands near here were granted to the Indians of 20 tribes, including the Seneca, Shawnee, Peoria, Miami, Ottawa, and Wyandot. Wealth came to the Quapaw and other Indians after the discovery of rich lead and zinc deposits in this area beginning in 1905.
