HD Trek Across Texas

HD Trek Across Texas - Riders

Neither of the riders comes from a family with Huntington's Disease.

In 1997, Marie Nemec discovered HD through meeting Carmen Leal, author of "Faces of Huntington's," on the Christian Writer's Group list on the Internet. In June 1998, at Carmen's invitation, Marie attended the HDSA Convention in Denver, CO. After this experience, Marie was deeply touched. She had to "do" something. Her Christian faith required action; "let us not love with word or with tongue...but in deed and truth" (1 John 3:18). This is her fifth ride for HD; previous rides include pedaling twice from the Pacific to the Atlantic (on different routes), Canada to Mexico, and a "Ramble 'Round the Colonies." Close to 10,000 miles have been covered in these past rides, though parts of 29 states, raising over $93,000 to help cure HD. This year the goal is to reach the total of $115,000.

Charlotte Reicks and Marie Nemec - Trek Across Texas cyclistsThis is Charlotte Reicks' fourth ride for HD. In 1999 she rode with Marie on "Bike for the Cure 99" from Santa Monica to Charleston, WV. Along with Evelyn Logan, she continued on an 8400-mile "Infinity Loop" around the U.S. for the American Bible Society and Lutheran Hour Ministries. In 2000 she bicycled 700 miles in Colorado for Habitat for Humanity. In 2001 Charlotte rejoined the HD cause, riding with Marie and Amanda Adams on the "Border War on HD." In 2002 she rode the last 10 days of the "HD Ramble' Round the Colonies."
